“JEERNAM JEERNAM VATAPI JEERNAM”
These lines are said by our parents and forefathers when a child finishes his food. Have you ever known the reason and meaning behind its origin? Today, let’s learn and share and start following these once again.
In olden days, when people used to travel through forest areas, two demons Ilvakul and Vatapi used to mesmerize them with their magical words saying there is a feast going on in forest, so please come and attend it.
Vatapi mean while turns himself as a goat and llvakul cooks and serves to people . After people finished their feast, llvakul used to call Vatapi and Vatapi used to come out tearing their stomach and both demons fed on dead ppl. Agastya Rushi started thinking, why people traveling through the forest couldnt return back .So he decided to go into the forest in disguise of common man to know what is happening in the forest. The saint came across Vatapi n llvakul .They repeated the same story of Vatapi turning into goat .This time Vatapi could not come out who entered Agastya rushi’s stomach, as after having the feast rubbing his stomach he uttered Jeernam jeernam Vatapi jeernam. This means how much ever you eat and if it is a mountain is in your stomach,it gets digested.
Later, llvakul was vanished into dust. So,this is the reason why our elders used to say those lines after feeding kids.Even today, few families follow them. It is believed a simple act like this, children are cured and freed from stomach ailments, at least.
